Forwards some papers. Sir Robert Hamilton has arrived at Indore. Before he arrived, Durand had returned with the column from Mundissor and disarmed Holkar's mutinous Cavalry. Two regiments of Infantry were disarmed on 16 Dec. Elphinstone does not know why this was not done three or four months before. Hopes that the mutineers will now be punished, to quell the widespread belief that Holkar is secretly unfriendly to the British, and that Nana Peishwa will return at the head of his and Scindia's troops to restore the Mahratta supremacy in the Deccan. News of the defeat of the Gwalior Contingent by Sir Colin Campbell has been received.
Enclosed: 1. Return of the troops now in Rajpootana, and en route, and under orders to join. 14 Dec 1857.
2. Return of the Nerbudda Field Force as it stands at present and as it will stand when reinforced as intended. 11 Dec 1857
