- Custodial History:
-
Origin: Canterbury, Southeastern England.
Provenance:
The Benedictine cathedral priory of Holy Trinity or Christ Church, Canterbury: the martyrology was annotated with records of names and death dates of many Christ Church monks, as well as brothers from Glastonbury, Faversham and others in its confraternity, including the obits of Gundulph, bishop of Rochester, and William, Abbot of Fécamp (both in 1108), and possibly that of Anselm (1109); and with a record of Stephen Langton's consecration of the church in 1207); these additions were subsequently erased to make space for the insertion of the epact numbers for each year in the nineteen-year cycle (in order to find a date in the lunar calendar), and entered in a separate table, now Cotton MS Nero C IX (ff. 3-18); the original last leaf was removed and substituted with a late 12th-century one containing the martyrdom of Thomas Becket, subsequently covered with black ink (f. 73); the manuscript also included sermons for the dedication of Christ Church and its octave, and Lanfranc's Constitutiones containing regulations for Canterbury monks, now bound in Cotton MS Claudius C VI, (ff.168-196); former press-mark from Christ Church 'D VII Ga XIII', included in the priory's catalogue prepared by Henry of Eastry at the beginning of the 14th century, no. 291 (see James, The Ancient Libraries of Canterbury and Dover (1903)).
Added litany written by an early 13th-century hand, beginning 'Te adoro piissime Iesu tremende colende semper adorande' (f. 1r).
Added 16th-century notes citing excerpts from the canonists Niccolò Tedeschi and Guillaume de Montlaudun (f. 93v).
