This manuscript was formerly bound together with the Coronation Book of Charles V of France, numbered ff. 35-80, now Cotton MS Tiberius B VIII/2. The folio numbering of this part (ff. 3-34, 81-197) is that of the composite volume, bound together by Cotton in the 17th century as Cotton MS Tiberius B VIII.
This manuscript consists of a Pontifical, initially written for the diocese of Canterbury and later adapted for the diocese of Glasgow, for use at the Cathedral Church of St Mungo. Although the references to the diocese of Canterbury remained untouched, an early 14th-century hand has added 'Glasguensi' in the section related to the ordination of abbots (f. 106v).
ff. 3r-196v: Liber Pontificalis (Pontifical). The consecration of a bishop, beginning with the requirement that the bishop elect has to bind himself to obedience to the see of Canterbury: 'Decretum quod clerus et populus firmare debet de electo episcopo. Venerando sancte Cantuariensis ecclesie metropolitano'; including the mass celebrated for the ordination (ff. 5v-12r), beginning: 'Incipit examinatio ordinandi episcopi que est agenda die dominica antequam missa celebretur'; the benediction of the bishop (ff. 15v-23r) followed by the consecration of the new bishop by the archbishop with prayers (ff. 23r-28v); the benediction of the new bishop, beginning: 'Populus te honoret adiuvet te Dominus' (ff. 28v-29v), including a special mass with antiphons for the consecration of the new bishop (ff. 29v-34v); the Ordo consecrationis regis (Instructions for the consecration of a king) (ff. 79r-99v), beginning: 'Incipit consecratio regis. Consecrandum regem de conventu fidelium seniorum per manus producant ad ecclesiam et chorus decantet hanc. Amen'; the consecration of a queen (ff. 99v-105v), beginning: 'Benedictio regine dicenda in ingressu ecclesie secundum ordinem romanorum'; the Ordo abbatis (Instructions for the consecration of an abbot) (ff. 105v-111v), beginning: 'In abbatis ordinatione. Episcopus ipse missam complere et eum benedicere debet'; the Benedictio monachorum (benediction of monks) (ff. 111v-117v); the Benedictio super abbatissam (benediction of an abbess) (ff. 117v-122v); the Consecratio virginis monialis (consecration of nuns) (ff. 122v-147r); the benediction of widows and their clothes (ff. 147r-150v); the confirmation of children (ff. 151r-152r); several blessings and benedictions related to soldiers, introduced by Psalm 69 (ff. 152r-157r); trials by ordeal of iron, hot and cold water (ff. 157r-188r); an exorcism with bread and goat cheese (ff. 188v-196v), ending: 'Qui venturus est iudicare'.
Decoration:
Red, blue and green initials, some with foliated decoration. Rubrics in red.
Neumes and musical notations (ff. 29-34).
