A copy of a letter from Lord Minto, Governor-General of Bengal, to Sir Harford Jones, HM Ambassador and Minister Plenipotentiary to Persia [Iran], sent from Fort William [Kolkata] and dated 20 July 1809.
The letter reprimands Jones for his infrequent and inadequate communication with the Governor-General about his work in Persia, and requests that he send all relevant dispatches as well as a detailed report of his proceedings in the country to Fort William. Jones is warned of using his position in a way that might be hostile to the East India Company and its interests. He is notified of the intention to send Dr Jukes to the Persian Court to engage with ministers regarding the recent treaty between the two powers [Preliminary Treaty of Friendship and Alliance, 1809], and instructed to remain where he is and not to interfere with the negotiations.
The letter was enclosed in Jones's Letter No. 2 to the Secret Committee of the Court of Directors of the East India Company dated 3 February 1810.
