Copy of dispatch No. 2 from HM Ambassador Extraordinary to Persia [Iran], Sir Gore Ouseley, in Tehran, to the Governor-General of the Presidency of Fort William, Lord Minto, of 17 January 1812. The dispatch details Ouseley’s support for continuing to pay Persia a subsidy with which to train its armed forces, giving the following reasons:
- Persian perceptions of increased military success as a result of the subsidy
- Securing the position of Crown Prince of Persia, Abbas Mirza, as successor to the Shah
- The danger of Persian enmity threatening British possessions in India
- The role of the subsidy in influencing the Shah’s attitude towards peace with Russia.
The dispatch is enclosed with a cover letter to the Secret Committee of the East India Company, dated 25 January 1812, and was received on 8 August 1812.
