Copy of a letter from Major-General Sir William Grant Keir, aboard Transport Orient off Sharga [Sharjah], to HM Chargé d'Affaires to Persia [Iran], Henry Willock, of 30 January 1820. The letter concerns the British expedition to the Persian Gulf to attack the al-Qawasim and their allies, detailing:
- The views of the Persian Government towards the expedition (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/215-216 and IOR/L/PS/9/68/219)
- The destruction of fortifications and seizure of boats along the coast from Rumz [Rams] to Aboo Heyle [Abu Hail], and the seizure of boats from the Port of Dabye [Dubai]
- ‘Piratical Boats’ taking shelter at the Port of Bahrein [Bahrain] • The British identification of and intentions towards the ports on the Persian coast accused of piracy
- British intentions for the Port of Rasul Khyma [Ra’s al-Khaymah]
- The suitability of Kishmee [Qeshm] as a permanent base from which the British may suppress ‘piracy’ in the Persian Gulf.
The letter was enclosed in Willock’s letter to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 12 March 1820 (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/243), which was received on 13 July 1820.
