Copy of a letter from Major-General Sir William Grant Keir, at Sharga [Sharjah], to Captain Francis Augustus Collier, of 1 February 1820. The letter contains instructions for Captain Collier and Captain Francis Erskine Loch as part of the ongoing expedition against the al-Qawasim and their allies in the Persian Gulf. Keir’s instructions include:
- To familiarise Shaik Abdalla bin Ahmed [Shaikh ‘Abdullāh bin Aḥmad Āl Khalīfah] of Bahrein [Bahrain] with the terms of the recently signed General Treaty [General Treaty with the Arab Tribes of the Persian Gulf] and to encourage him to cooperate with the British in their campaign against vessels accused of piracy
- To attack the vessels of Rahma bin Jauber [Shaikh Raḥmah bin Jābir al-Jalhamī] in retaliation for an attack on a Persian vessel
- To communicate to the Imaum [Imam] of Muscat the British Government’s opposition to his plans to subjugate Bahrein.
The letter was enclosed in Keir’s letter to HM Chargé d’Affaires to Persia [Iran], Henry Willock, of 2 February 1820 (see IOR/L/PS/9/68/245).
