Copies and translations of dispatches and correspondence concerning the arrival of the East India Company Envoy to Persia [Iran], Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, in Persia. The collection contains the following dispatches from Macdonald Kinneir:
- Dispatch No. 2 to the Chief Secretary of the Supreme Government of India, George Swinton
- Dispatch No. 3 to the Governor-General of India, Lord Amherst
- Dispatch No. 4 to Swinton.
Enclosed with these dispatches are copies and drafts of correspondence between Macdonald Kinneir and the following Persian officials:
- The Crown Prince of Persia, Abbas Mirza ['Abbās Mīrzā Qājār]
- The Vizier to the Crown Prince of Persia, the Cayim Mukam [Mirza Abū al-Qāsim Farāhānī, Qāʾim-Maqām]
- The Prime Minister of Persia Allah Yar Khan Assuff ed Dowleh [Allah Yar Khan Qajar Davallu, Asif al-Dawlah]
Also included are translations or copies of letters to Macdonald Kinneir from:
- The Vizier of Fars, Zekee Khan [Zaki Khan]
- The Governor General of Fars, Hussein Ali Meerza [Ḥusayn ‘Alī Mirzā, Farmānfarmā]
- Mahomed Hussan Khan Kujer Itsk Agassi Bashee [Muhammad Hasan Khan Qajar Davallu, Ishik Aqasi Bashi], appointed to act as Macdonald Kinneir’s Mehmendar (official escort) on the journey from Bushire [Bushehr] to Shiraz
- HM Chargé d'Affaires to Persia, Henry Willock.
These documents pertain to Macdonald Kinneir’s arrival in Persia to undertake a diplomatic mission on behalf of the Government of India. They cover various aspects of his arrival in Persia, including introductions, his reception, and his journeys from Bushire to Shiraz and to the Court of the Shah [Fath-‘Ali Shāh Qājār].
These documents were originally enclosed in Macdonald Kinneir’s letter to the Secretary at East India House, Joseph Dart, of 9 June 1826 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/91).
