Translations of two letters from the Governor-General of Georgia, General Yermaloff [General Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov] to the Crown Prince of Persia [Iran], Abbas Meerza [ʿAbbās Mīrzā Qājār]. In the first letter General Yermaloff indicates that he has not permitted the Persian envoy Meerza Mahomed Ali [Mīrzā Muḥammad ʿAlī Khan Shīrāzī] to proceed to Petersburgh [St Petersburg], as per Abbas Meerza’s request, on account of the ongoing war between Russia and Persia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828], but that the documents entrusted to Meerza Mahomed Ali have been forwarded by courier to Petersburgh. In the second letter General Yermaloff indicates his willingness to undertake a prisoner exchange, as suggested by Abbas Meerza, and reports that he has drawn up a list of Persian prisoners (not included in this item) whom he will gather together around the beginning of April.
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 3, in the letter of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 21 April 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/70/214).
