This item consists of two Russian military communications during the ongoing war between Russia and Persia [Iran] in the Caucasus [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]:
- An intercepted letter from General Peskowitch [Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky], Governor-General of Georgia, to General Benkendoff [Major-General and Adjutant Konstantin Khristoforovich Benkendorf]. General Paskevich orders General Benkendorf not to advance towards Nukshivan [Nakhchivan], and instead to remain in Erivan [Yerevan] and secure his supply convoys
- An extract of an intercepted letter in French from General ‘B’ to General Benkendorf. The letter recommends taking the direct route from Couchar [Gokcha, Lake Sevan] to Tauris [Tabriz] rather than expending resources on Erivan.
These documents were originally enclosed, numbered 8 in Dispatch No. 49, in the letter of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 22 June 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/1).
