Copy of dispatch No. 54 from the East India Company Envoy to Persia [Iran], Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, in camp on the borders of the Lake of Shahee [Lake Urmia], to the Chief Secretary to the Government of India, George Swinton, of 9 July 1827. The letter concerns the ongoing war between Russia and Persia [Russo-Persian War 1826-1828], detailing the final departure of Russian troops from the failed siege at Erivan [Yerevan], and the arrival of General Paskevitch [General Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky] and his army at Nukshirvan [Nakhchivan]. Macdonald Kinneir also reports that he has secured the removal of a group of Russian prisoners of war from captivity in mountainous terrain to the ‘comparative comfort’ of captivity at Maragha [Maragheh] (see IOR/L/PS/9/70/209-210).
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 2, in Macdonald Kinneir’s letter to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 10 July 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/21).
