Translation of a letter from the Governor-General of Georgia, General Paskevitch [General Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky], to Prince Abbas Meerza [Crown Prince of Persia, ʿAbbās Mīrzā Qājār]. Responding to Abbas Meerza’s request for his views on the ongoing war between Persia [Iran] and Russia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828] (see IOR/L/PS/9/71/12), General Paskevitch indicates that he is willing to agree peace with Persia, providing that the peace is concluded ‘in a manner worthy of the honour and consistent with the interests of Russia’. He also indicates his view that Russia was not at fault for the outbreak of the war, and that Russia might be justified in seeking ‘due retribution’ from the Persian Government for ‘hostile and faithless acts’.
This document was originally enclosed, numbered 4, in the letter of the East India Company Envoy to Persia, Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir, to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 10 July 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/21).
