A copy of a letter from John McNeill, Surgeon to the British Mission in Tehran, to Meerza Abool Hassan Khan [Mīrzā Abū al-Ḥasan Khān Shīrāzī], Foreign Minister of Persia [Iran], sent from Tehraun [Tehran] and dated 26 November 1827.
The letter concerns the ongoing war between Persia and Russia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]. McNeill outlines Russia’s military capabilities and the likely consequences of a Russian advance on Tehraun, and urges the Persian Government to accept one of the two Russian peace proposals offered by General Paskevitch [Ivan Fyodorovich Paskevich-Erivansky, Governor-General of Georgia]. McNeill recommends the first proposal, whereby Persia will cede Russia a larger sum of money but less territory.
This letter was originally enclosed, numbered 6 in 77, in the letter from East India Company Envoy to Persia Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 15 December 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/129).
