A copy of a letter from the East India Company Envoy to Persia [Iran] Lieutenant-Colonel John Macdonald Kinneir to John McNeill, Surgeon to the British Mission in Tehraun [Tehran], sent from Deheraghan [Azarshahr] and dated 12 December 1827.
The letter concerns peace terms for ending the war between Persia and Russia [Russo-Persian War, 1826-1828]. Macdonald Kinneir states that the Shah’s [Fatḥ-‘Alī Shāh Qājār] conditions for peace as described by McNeill in an earlier letter (IOR/L/PS/9/71/133) are not acceptable to Russia as Abbas Meerza [‘Abbās Mīrzā Qājār, Crown Prince of Persia] has already agreed to terms less favourable to Persia. Macdonald Kinneir urges that an instalment of the money demanded by Russia from the Persian Government be paid without delay, warning that Russia will otherwise break off peace talks and resume hostilities.
This letter was originally enclosed, numbered 11 in 77, in Macdonald Kinneir’s letter to the Secret Committee of the East India Company of 15 December 1827 (IOR/L/PS/9/71/129).
