Section from a stela bearing a hymn to Osiris, broken at top. 17 lines of text survive.
This limestone stela shows classical hieroglyphs from 3,600 years ago. It contains a hymn to the god of the netherworld, Osiris, and is currently the oldest object in the British Library collection.

Provenance: Purchased by William Henry Fox Talbot at Sotheby’s auction 14th March 1837, lot no.707. Remained at Lacock Abbey, home of the Talbot family, until its donation to the British Library as part of the Talbot Collection in 2006.
Conserved in 2019 for display in the British Library exhibition ‘Writing, Making your mark.’
