Manuscript journal of William Hawke on board HMS Woolf, under the command of Captain George Purvis, 20 December 1690-14 November 1691. In this time HMS Woolf sailed from England to Virginia, from Virginia back to England, and then from England to Ireland.
Contents:
- f. 1 (upside down): Extra entries of the journal for the days 16 June 1691, 27 February 1690/1, 23 June 1691, 14 August 1691, and 6 October 1691. The entry for 16 June 1691 details a beating William Hawke received from Christopher Allingbie, second mate.
- f. 1v: A pencil sketch of the ship.
- f. 2: A watercolour sketch of the ship. On the back is inscribed a short diary entry for 3 February.
- ff. 3-33: The journal of William Hawke on board HMS Woolf, 20 December 1690-14 November 1691.
- f. 34: A list of all the men who died on board the HMS Woolf during the voyage.
- f. 35: A memorandum of the time that William Hawke was at short allowance on board HMS Woolf.
- f. 35v: A watercolour sketch of the ship.

The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (1661-1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (1689-1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
