Manuscript miscellany of treatises and poems by Robert Whitehall and Mary More
- Scope & Content:
-
An octavo manuscript miscellany containing treatises and poems by Robert Whitehall (bap. 1624-d. 1685), fellow of Merton College, Oxford, and the writer and artist Mary More (d. c. 1713). Also includes other miscellaneous verses and recipes for 'Jelly of Hartshorn' (ff. 39v and 45v) and a treatment for sore eyes (f. 44v). This manuscript is thought to contain the only known extant copy of More’s treatise ‘The Womans Right’, which probably dates from the 1670s. The verses at ff. 59r-60r probably date from 1674, when More gifted her portrait of Thomas More to Merton College, Oxford. The manuscript was possibly compiled by Robert Whitehall.
Contents include:
- f. 1r-v: ‘To ye Reader’. By Robert Whitehall.
- ff. 2r-25r: ‘The Womans Right proved False in which the True Right is easily discerned’. By Robert Whitehall. A rebuttal to Mary More’s ‘The Womans Right’ (at ff. 46r-58r).
- ff. 26r-27v: ‘A Satyr against Marriage Directed to that Inconsiderable Animal, called Husband’. First line: ‘Husband! thou Dull unpitied miscreant’. By John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester.
- ff. 28r-43v: Various poems by anonymous authors, many on the subjects of love and relationships.
- ff. 46r-58r: ‘The Womans Right Or Her Power in a Greater Equality to Her Husband proved than is allowed or practised in England. From misunderstanding Some Scriptures, and false rendering others from the Original, plainly showing an equality in Man and Woman before the Fall, and not much difference after’. Subscribed ‘Written by M. M.’. By Mary More. Including a preface addressed to ‘My little Daughter Elizabeth Waller’.
- f. 59r: ‘To the no less Virtuous than Ingenious Mis Mary More, upon her sending Sr Thomas More’s Picture (of her own drawing) to the Long Gallery at the Publick Schools in Oxon:’. First line: ‘Madam, Yo[u]r Benefaction has been such’. Signed ‘R: W:’. By Robert Whitehall.
- f. 60r: ‘An Answer. By Mary More To the most Ingenious Mr Robert Whitehall Fellow of Morton College in Oxon: upon a copy of verses sent her by him on sending a Picture of her own drawing to Oxon:’. First line: ‘Sr Jear yo[u]r Benefactress that’s but just’.

Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (1694-1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (1715-1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
