‘Persia. Final orders issued for the settlement of the pecuniary claim advanced by Mr Sarkies Satoor at Tehran against Mrs Shee, widow of the late Lieutenant Colonel Shee, formerly Commanding the British Deatchment in Persia.’
- Scope & Content:
-
The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence, minutes and resolutions, cited in, or enclosed with, an extract from a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 23 June 1849.
The item relates to a claim for 286 tomans against Mrs Takwee [Taguhi] Shee, widow of the late Colonel Basil Shee, by an Armenian merchant named Sarkis Satoor [also rendered in text as Sarkeis and Sarkies]. Mrs Shee is owed money from the Persian [Iranian] Government, as her husband’s pay was in arrears at the time of his death. The item contains discussions about the validity of Mr Satoor’s claim and the validity of Mrs Shee's counter-claim that she had previously left him with articles for sale worth 231 tomans.
Principal correspondents include: Gilbert James Blane, Acting Accountant General; Colonel Francis Farrant, HM Chargé d’Affaires at Teheran [Tehran]; Augustus Smith Le Messurier, Advocate General; the Court of Directors; and the governments of Bombay and India.
All of the material in the item dates from 1848-49, except from an extract of a letter from the Court of Directors which is dated 22 July 1846.
The title page of the item contains the following references: ‘Bombay Political Department’, ‘Draft No. 714/49’, ‘Collection No. 17 of No. 56’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally ‘29’, but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘17’.
