This item consists of copies of correspondence, consultations, and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2349/123808. The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Major Samuel Hennell, British Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; Moollah Houssein [Mullā Ḥusayn], British Agent at Shargah [Sharjah]; and Lieutenant Alan Hyde Gardner, Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf. It is the sixth in a series of twenty-four items on events in the Persian Gulf.
The item concerns Gardner’s tours of the Arabian Coast of the Persian Gulf in the East India Company sloop of war Elphinstone, and his communications with the shaikhs of Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi] and Debaye [Dubai], whose subjects had plundered each other’s property at sea.
