This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2174/105546. It is the seventh in a series of forty-five items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Major Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf; Mollah Hussein [Mullā Ḥusayn], Native Agent at Shargah [Sharjah]; and Sheikh Maktoom bin Butye, Chief of Debaie [Shaikh Maktūm I bin Buṭṭī Āl Bū Falāsah, Ruler of Dubai].
The item concerns the relations between Saad bin Mootluk [Sa‘d bin Muṭlaq al-Muṭayrī, also referred to as Saad ul Mooteyree in the item] at Brymee [al-Buraymi], and the rulers of Oman and the Gulf. It includes:
- The reported extortions of Saad bin Mootluk and his followers
- The formation of an alliance against Saad bin Mootluk by the ‘principal chiefs of Oman’, and the agreement of Sheikh Maktoom bin Butye and Sheikh Saed bin Tahnoon [Shaikh Sa‘īd bin Ṭaḥnūn Āl Nahyān, Ruler of Abu Dhabi] to join them
- Saad bin Mootluk’s relationship with Suggur bin Sultan [Ṣaqr bin Sultān al-Qāsimī] of Shargah [Sharjah]
- A request from Sheikh Maktoom bin Butye to Hennell to prevent aid from being sent to Saad bin Mootluk
- Hennell’s recommendation that Britain does not intervene in the situation.
The item also contains the comments of the Government of Bombay (ff 334-35) regarding despatches from Hennell that are not included in this item.
