‘Persian Gulf. Claims of Hajee Mahamed Ally Suffer against the Chief of Kishn.’
- Scope & Content:
-
This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2174/105546. It is the seventeenth in a series of forty-five items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Major Samuel Hennell, Resident in the Persian Gulf; Sheik Abdool Rahman bin Suggur, Governor of Kishm [Shaikh ‘Abd al-Raḥmān bin Ṣaqr al-Mu‘īnī, Governor of Qeshm]; and Sheikh Syf ben Nubhan, Governor of Bunder Abbass [Shaikh Sayf bin Nabhān al-Ma‘walī, Governor of Bandar-e ʻAbbas].
The item concerns the claim of Hajee Mahomed Ally Suffur [Ḥājjī Muḥammad ‘Alī Ẓafar], a merchant of Bombay, regarding a sum of money paid in deposit by Sheik Abdool Rahman bin Suggur as compensation for certain bags of sugar said to have been taken from the wreck of a ship on Kishm in 1838. It had previously been agreed that the sum would be transferred to Hajee Mahomed Ally Suffur only once he had sworn an oath that the sugar had indeed been saved from the wreck. This has not yet been done, and Sheik Abdool Rahman bin Suggur has requested the return of the money he paid. Hennell investigates and arranges a compromise in order to settle the case.
The item contains a table of contents (f 414), and the title page (f 413) contains the following references: ‘P C [Previous Communication] 5507, Coll. 7, Vol. 17’, ‘D/t 197/47’, ‘Collection No. 5 of No. 53’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’.
