The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of a Military Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 30 September 1847.
The first part of the item, folios 722-731, contains enclosures to paragraph two of the Military Letter. The second part, folios 732-737, contains enclosures to paragraph three of the Military Letter.
The item relates to progress reports on engineering works being carried out at Aden, forwarded to the Bombay Military Board by Captain James Kilner, Executive Engineer, and Captain Henry Joshua Margary, Assistant Executive Engineer. The reports contain updates on different elements of the engineering works such as tunnels, towers and boring experiments. Mathematical details are provided as well as information on the materials used.
The title page of the item contains the following references: ‘Bombay Military Depart[men]t’, ‘P.C. [Previous Communication] 5942, Draft 151/48’ and ‘Collection No. 2’. The ‘2’ in ‘Collection No. 2’ has been crossed out and replaced with ‘13’. Folio 732 recto also features the title and contains the following references: ‘Bombay Military Depart[men]t’, ‘Collection No. 3’.
