This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2302/118727. The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Commander John Croft Hawkins, Senior Naval Officer in the Persian Gulf; and Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Hennell, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf. It is the third in a series of fifty-one items on the Persian Gulf.
The item concerns Croft’s report of a cruise he undertook of the Persian [Iranian] Coast, including the following incidents:
- A demand by a Hindu merchant on the Shaik of Bahrein [Shaikh Muḥammad bin Khalīfah Āl Khalīfah, Shaikh of Bahrain]
- The sinking of the Hashmee and the conduct of the Shaik of Assaloo [Bandar-e Asaluyeh] and his family on this occasion
- Disputes between Assaloo and Lingah [Bandar-e Lengeh]
- The case of a man who owned an eighth part of a vessel but sold the vessel without the consent of the other seven partners
- The complaints of the Shaik of Congoon [Shaikh Ḥusayn bin Jubārah of Kangan] against his neighbours
- The visit of an officer of the Crown Prince of Persia to Congoon
- A conversation between the Reverend Henry Stern of the Jewish London Missionary Society, and the shaikhs of Bahrein.
