The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence and minutes cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 13 January 1853, and found at IOR/F/4/2504/142185. The item is the tenth in a series of sixteen items about the Persian Gulf.
The item relates to two recent incidents in the Gulf as reported to the Government of Bombay by Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf.
The first concerns the seizure and plunder of a boat belonging to the Beni Humad [Banī Ḥammād] people of Kelat [Kalat] by people from Charrack [Bandar-e Charak]. The item contains correspondence between Kemball and Colonel Justin Sheil, HM Minister at Tehran, discussing details of the case and steps to take to ensure the return of the stolen property. A letter from Kemball to Sheik Hassan ben Abdullah Abdul Rahman [Shaikh Ḥasan bin ‘Abdullah ‘Abd al-Raḥmān], Governor of Charrack, is included.
The second concerns the attack on, and seizure of, a boat belonging to the people of Kussabeah [Al Qasabiyat?] by Mahomed ben Esai [Muḥammad bin ‘Īsá] and other members of the Al Ali [Āl ‘Alī] tribe currently residing on the island of Ges [Kish]. The item contains correspondence between: Kemball; Hajee Yacoob [Ḥājjī Ya‘qūb], Agent at Shargah [Sharjah]; and Commodore George Robinson, Commanding Persian Gulf Squadron. They discuss details of the case, including whose authority the Al Ali people come under, and steps to take if the boat is not returned to its owners. A letter from Kemball to Ali ben Sultan [‘Alī bin Sulṭān] and the elders of the Al Ali tribe at Ges is included.
The correspondence is forwarded on to the Government of India.
Sheil is also referred to as HM Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary at the Court of Persia [Iran]. The item contains multiple spellings of multiple personal names and place names.
