This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay. The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Colonel Justin Sheil, Her Majesty’s Ambassador at Tehran. It is the second in a series of five items.
The item concerns the payment of customs duties by British merchants importing and exporting merchandise to and from Persia [Iran]. Sheil details the decision that customs duties are to be calculated solely on the nationality of the owner of the merchandise, not the nationality of the ship in which the goods are imported.
