- Title:
- ‘Persian Gulf. Principle of paying direct to sufferers from piracy, etc., of compensation recovered by the British Government in their behalf.’
- Scope & Content:
-
This item consists of copies of correspondence, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2550/149197. It is the sixth in a series of sixteen items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Hajee Yacoob [Ḥājjī Ya‘qūb], Agent at Shargah [Sharjah].
The item concerns the Court of Director’s instruction that monies recovered as compensation for victims of ‘piracies’ should now be paid directly to the victims, rather than to the rulers whose dependents they are. Kemball and Hajee Yacoob report that, in the case of Sheikh Sultan ben Suggur, the Joasmee ‘Chief’ [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, Ruler of the Qawāsim], the new arrangement is causing problems.
The item contains a table of contents (f 497), and the title page (f 496) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘358 - 1854’, ‘Collection No. 10 of No. 109 of 1853. Vol. 6’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘4’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘10’.
