- Title:
- ‘Persian Gulf Meerza Mahomed Ali Khan. Advance of 500 Tomans to- as compensation for losses sustained by him in the late Earthquake at Shiraz subsequently converted into a present.’
- Scope & Content:
-
The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence, minutes and resolutions, cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 28 April 1854, and found at IOR/F/4/2575/152543. It is the fourth in a series of thirteen items about the Persian Gulf.
The item relates to money given, as a present, from the Company to Meerza Mahomed Ali Khan Nuwab [Mīrzā Muḥammad ‘Alī Khān Navvāb, Vakil al-Dawlah] in Shiraz [also rendered as Shirauz], following an earthquake which has damaged his property. This is in recognition of his services to both the Company and to 'English travellers'. Earlier correspondence, dating from 1818 and 1824-25, is included to show the precedent of providing his family with financial aid as his father, Jafer Ali [Jaʿfar ‘Alī], was also in the service of the Company.
Correspondents include: Ephraim Gerrish Stannus, Resident in the Gulf [1823-27]; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf [1852-55]; and the governments of Bombay and India.
The title page of the item contains the following references: 'Bombay Political Department', 'P.C. [Previous Communication] 8964', Draft Number '908 [18]54', 'Collection No. 1 of No. 32 of 1854', 'Vol: 4', and 'Examiner's Office'. Originally, the Collection number was given as '4' but this has been crossed out and replaced with '1'.
