This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, an extract of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 29 August 1854. The enclosures are dated 15 March-31 July 1854. It is the tenth in a series of twelve items about the ‘slave trade’ [trade in enslaved people].
The correspondents are the Government of Bombay and Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf.
The item concerns the liability of Sheikh Hassan bin Abdoollah [Shaikh Ḥasan bin ‘Abdullāh], the Chief [Governor] of Charrack [Bandar-e Charak] for a number of enslaved people recently brought into his territory. It includes:
- A visit by Sheikh Hassan bin Abdoollah to Bushire [Bushehr] to discuss the case
- A translation of a written promise given by Sheikh Hassan bin Abdoollah to hand over the ten enslaved people in his possession and detain the two ships in which they were carried
- The plans for a Company ship to travel to Charrack to take charge of the enslaved people and convey them to Bombay [Mumbai].
This is the second of two items on this incident. The first item can be found at IOR/F/4/2580/153773.
The item contains a table of contents (f 836), and the title page (f 835) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘1045/54’, ‘Collection No. 9 of No. 58 of 1854. Vol: 2’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘7’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘9’.
