This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, an extract of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 14 October 1854. The enclosures are dated 11 February 1854-October 1854.
The main correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Major Atkins Hamerton, HM Consul and the Company’s Agent in the Dominions of the Imaum [Imām] of Muscat.
The item concerns:
- An investigation into a ship that was plundered near Zanzibar in 1852, and the question of who is liable to pay reparations
- An allegation, made by Sheikh Sultan bin Suggur, ‘Chief’ of Rasel Khymah [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, Ruler of Ra’s al-Khaymah], also referred to in the item as the Joasmee [Qawāsim] ‘Chief’, that a ship belonging to his subjects was boarded and plundered at Samoo [Lamu, also rendered as ‘Lamoo’ in the item].
The Political Letter also mentions the dismissal of Mirza Fuzl Oollah [Mīrzā Faz̤l Allah Shīrāzī] from the position of Native Agent at Shiraz. The enclosures relating to this are contained in IOR/F/4/2588/155270.
The item contains a table of contents (f 430), and the title page (f 429) contains the following references: Draft Number ’93-1855’, ‘Collection No. 8 of No. 67 of 1854. (In 2 volumes) Vol: 1’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘2’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘8’.
