This item consists of copies of correspondence, despatches, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, an extract of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 14 October 1854. The Political Letter appears in IOR/F/4/2588/155269. The enclosures are dated 31 August 1853-31 July 1854.

The main correspondents are: the governments of Bombay and India; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf; and William Taylour Thomson, HM Chargé d’Affaires at the Court of Persia [Iran].

The item concerns the decision to increase the salary of the Native Agent at Shiraz, and the question of whether this should be reviewed following the dismissal from this post of Meerza Fuzl Oollah [Mīrzā Faz̤l Allah Shīrāzī, also rendered as Meerza Fezl Ullah and Mirza Fuzul Oollah in the item] and the appointment, on a temporary basis, of Mahomed Hassan Khan [Muḥammad Ḥasan Khān]. There is also discussion as to whether the Native Agent at Shiraz should be granted a Khelat [Khal’at, also rendered as Killut] at Nav Roz [Naw Rūz; Persian New Year celebrations].

The item contains a table of contents (ff 438-439), and the title page (f 437) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘93-1855’, ‘Collection No. 8 of No. 67 of 1854. Vol: 2’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘3’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘8’.
