This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of Political Letters from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 2 November 1855. The enclosures are dated 14 January-19 October 1855. It is the second in a series of eight items on the Persian Gulf.
The main correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Captain Arnold Burrowes Kemball, Resident in the Persian Gulf; Commodore Richard Ethersey, Commanding Indian Naval Squadron in the Persian Gulf; Hajee Yacoob [Ḥājjī Ya‘qūb], British Agent at Shargah [Sharjah]; Khoja Hiskale [Khawājah Ḥizqīl bin Yūsuf], British Agent at Muscat; and Hajee Jassem [Ḥājjī Jāsim], British Agent at Bahrein [Bahrain].
The item concerns:
- An alleged ‘piracy’ committed on a boat belonging to Abdul Kereem [‘Abd al-Karīm], an inhabitant of Bahrein, and the efforts to identify the perpetrators and obtain compensation. Included is a list of the items taken from the boat with an estimate of their value (f 1184)
- The removal of Sheikh Saeed ben Tahnoon [Shaikh Sa‘īd bin Ṭaḥnūn Āl Nahyān] as Ruler of Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi], and his replacement by Sheikh Zaid bin Khulufa [Shaikh Zāyid bin Khalīfah Āl Nahyān]. Included are letters from both Sheikh Saeed and Sheikh Zaid
- The recent actions of Sheikh Sultan bin Suggur, the Joasmee ‘Chief’ [Shaikh Sulṭān I bin Ṣaqr al-Qāsimī, Ruler of the Qawāsim], including his decision to grant asylum to Sheikh Saeed bin Tahnoon, and to revoke his permission to allow the Soodan [Sūdān] tribe to settle in Khan [Al Khan].
The item contains a table of contents (f 1163), and the title page (f 1162) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘376 -/56’, ‘Collection No. 8 of No. 116 of 1855. Vol. 2’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘1’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘8’.
