The item consists of copies and extracts of correspondence cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 16 February 1856. A copy of this letter can be found at IOR/F/4/2641/169196, alongside details of further enclosures. The item is the ninth in a series of twelve items on events in the Persian Gulf.

The item contains letters from Stratford de Redcliffe, Ambassador at Constantinople [Istanbul], to Captain Felix Jones, Officiating Consul General, Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]. Stratford de Redcliffe passes on the thanks of the French Ambassador at Constantinople for the assistance Jones and [John George?] Taylor provided to the French Consular Agent at Baghdad in attempting to recover antiquities, from Nineveh, which were being transported down the river from Mohsul [Mosul]. He praises Jones for the work he did whilst temporarily in charge of HM's Consulate General at Baghdad.

Jones, now Acting Resident in the Persian Gulf, forwards the letters on to the Government of Bombay who in turn forward them to the Government of India.

The title page of the item contains the following references: 'Bombay Political Department', Draft Number '633 [18]56', 'Collection No. 1 of No. 16 of 1856.', 'Vol: 9', and 'Examiner's Office'. Originally, the Collection number was given as '5' but this has been crossed out and replaced with '1'.
