This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, minutes, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of Political Letters from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 10 June 1856. The enclosures are dated 17 January-27 May 1856. It is the fourth in a series of six items about the ‘slave trade’ [trade in enslaved people].
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Richard Spooner, Officiating Commissioner of Customs, Salt, and Opium, Bombay [Mumbai]; and Lieutenant-Colonel George Le Grand Jacob, Political Agent in Kutch.
The item concerns further correspondence following a case (described in IOR/F/4/2657/175369) of two vessels, the Futtay Kurreem [Fatḥ al-Karīm] and the Runsord Pursad [Ranchhoṛ Parsād; Raṇachoḍa Parsāda], which were accused of carrying enslaved people. It contains discussion of measures proposed to bring about the suppression of the ‘slave trade’ carried out between Zanzibar and Kutch [Kachchh], and includes a translation of a yadee [yādī, memo] from the Rao of Kutch (ff 185-186).
Further information is also provided about a former enslaved person who had been travelling on the Futtay Kurreem.
The item contains a table of contents (f 180), and the title page (f 179) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘1445- /56’, ‘Collection No. 2 of No. 55 of 1856. Vol: 2’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’.
