This item consists of copies of correspondence, memoranda, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of Political Letters from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 10 June 1856. The enclosures are dated 20 February 1856-June 1856. It is the first in a series of seven items about the ‘slave trade’ [trade in enslaved people].
The correspondents are: the Court of Directors; the Government of Bombay; John Pares Bickersteth, Company Solicitor, and Rear-Admiral Sir Henry John Leeke, Commander in Chief of the Indian Navy.
The item concerns a request from the Court of Directors for details of the proceeds made from the sale of the vessels Saiad [Sa‘īd] and Futtool Moobaruck [Fatḥ al-Mubārak], which had been captured and accused of participation in the ‘slave trade’. It includes a ‘Memo exhibiting the net amount realized by the sales of the two Slave Buglas’ (f 238).
The item also gives details of a claim made by certain parties to part of the cargo taken from the two vessels.
The item contains a table of contents (f 233), and the title page (f 232) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘30 of 1857’, ‘Collection No. 1 in 2 Volumes of No. 55 of 1856. Vol: 1’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’.
