- Scope & Content:
-
This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 17 November 1856. The political letter appears in IOR/F/4/2667/177852. The enclosures are dated 20 February-17 October 1856. It is the fifth in a series of eight items on events in the Persian Gulf during 1856 (IOR/F/4/2667/177852 to 177859).
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Commander Felix Jones, Acting Resident in the Persian Gulf; Lieutenant Herbert Frederick Disbrowe, Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf; Hyder Khan [Ḥaydar Khān], brother of the Dashtee Chief [Ruler of Dashti]; and Tahmasp Mirza [Shāhzādah Ṭahmāsp/Ṭahmāsb Mīrzā Muʾayyid al-Dawlah], Prince Governor of Fars.
The item concerns an enquiry from the Court of Directors regarding whether redress has been made by the Shaikh of Congoon [Bandar-e Kangan] for the plunder of a vessel from Koweit [Kuwait]. Jones reports that redress has not been made, and that a number of similar cases on the coast of Persia [Iran] remain unsettled. However, he provides details of one case which has been successfully resolved, with the Dashtee Chief [Ruler of Dashti] making restitution for two plundered vessels.
The item contains a table of contents (f 67), and the title page (f 66) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘251-/57’, ‘Collection No. 5 of No. 87 of 1856. Vol: 5’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’.
