- Scope & Content:

This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, extracts of a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, 17 November 1856. The political letter appears in IOR/F/4/2667/177852. The enclosures are dated 13 September 1855-17 October 1856. It is the sixth in a series of eight items on events in the Persian Gulf during 1856 (IOR/F/4/2667/177852 to 177859).
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Commander Felix Jones, Acting Resident in the Persian Gulf; Captain Herbert Frederick Disbrowe, Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf; Cornwallis Hewett, Resident at Kurrachee [Karachi]; Mr A Malcolm, Agent for Hewett; and Charles Augustus Murray, HBM’s Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Persia [Iran], also referred to as the Minister at Tehran.
The item concerns the shipping of horses owned by Cornwallis Hewett and his brother, Thomas Douglas Hewitt, from Bushire [Bushehr] to Kurrachee. The shipment was delayed as a result of the horses being detained by the Durrya Beggee [Daryā Begī, or Governor] of Bushire. Cornwallis submits a petition to the Government of Bombay, seeking redress from the Durrya Beggee for the costs he claims to have incurred. However, his claim is rejected, as a result of the decision made by Murray.
The item contains a table of contents (f 79), and the title page (f 78) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘251-/57’, ‘Collection No. 5 of No. 87 of 1856. Vol: 6’ and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘6’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘5’.
