This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, political letters from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors. These political letters appear in IOR/F/4/2710/194511. The enclosures are dated 27 December 1856-9 April 1857. It is the eighteenth in a series of twenty-six items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; the Government of India; Commander Felix Jones, Resident in the Persian Gulf and Political Agent with the Persian Expeditionary Force; and Edward Eden Elliot, Accountant General, Bombay.
The item concerns the decision taken by Jones to reduce the rate of exchange on Government Bills drawn on Bombay [Mumbai] or Calcutta [Kolkata], in response to the depreciation in value of the Company’s Rupee in Bushire [Bushehr]. It includes a copy of a notice issued by Jones regarding this decision.
The item contains a table of contents (f 705), and the title page (f 704) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘789-/58’, ‘Collection No. 9. Vol: 18’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘15’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘9’.
