This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 8 March 1858. The Political Letter appears in IOR/F/4/2728/198372. The enclosures are dated 8 September 1857-18 February 1858. It is the fourth in a series of ten items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Commander Felix Jones, Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Brigadier General John Jacob, Commanding British Forces in Persia.
The item concerns Hajee Ahmed [Ḥājjī Aḥmad], the Arabic Secretary (also referred to as the Arabic or Head Moonshee [Munshi]) at the Bushire [Bushehr] Residency. In light of Hajee Ahmed’s assistance during the recent war between Britain and Persia [Iran], and of his long service more generally, Jones requests that he might be granted an allowance on top of his normal salary.
The item includes copies of certificates, on the records of the Bushire Residency, commending the service of Hajee Ahmed, dated 12 April 1843, 9 February 1852, and 12 September 1855.
The item contains a table of contents (f 1106), and the title page (f 1105) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘1230-/58’, ‘Collection No. 1 of No. 10 of 1858. Vol: 4’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘4’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘1’.
