This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 8 March 1858. The Political Letter appears in IOR/F/4/2728/198372. The enclosures are dated 3 August 1857-24 February 1858. It is the fifth in a series of ten items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; the Government of India; Commander Felix Jones, Resident in the Persian Gulf; Lieutenant Herbert Frederick Disbrowe, Assistant Resident in the Persian Gulf; and Assistant Surgeon James McAlister, late Civil Surgeon to the Residency.
The item concerns claims for compensation as a result of damage done, during the recent war between Britain and Persia, to the houses of the Resident, the Assistant Resident, and McAlister at Chaghuddeck [Choghādak, various spellings appear in the item]. It includes transcripts of answers given during interviews conducted by Disbrowe with: John Aviet [John Āvīyat], Provision and supplier to the shipping; William Hayward, Residency Apothecary; Seth Essai [Seth Īsā‘ī], Treasurer to the Residency; and Kaeed Alee [Ka‘īd ‘Alī or Qāʼid ‘Alī?], formerly servant to the Assistant Resident.
The item contains a table of contents (f 1113), and the title page (f 1112) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘1230-/58’, ‘Collection No. 1 of No. 10 of 1858. Vol: 5’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘5’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘1’.
