This item consists of copies of correspondence, resolutions, and consultations cited in, or enclosed with, a Political Letter from the Government of Bombay to the East India Company Court of Directors, dated 8 March 1858. The Political Letter appears in IOR/F/4/2728/198372. The enclosures are dated 2 October 1857-23 February 1858. It is the eighth in a series of ten items on the Persian Gulf.
The correspondents are: the Government of Bombay; Commander Felix Jones, Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; Commander James Rennie, Senior Naval Officer Commanding Persian Gulf Squadron; Commodore George Greville Wellesley, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Navy; and J Campbell, Commanding Duke of Wellington.
The item concerns correspondence from Commander Jones alleging the non-cooperation of Commander Rennie on two matters:
- In addressing a complaint made by local people against the Master of the Duke of Wellington, a transport ship
- In recovering the amount of postage due on letters sent to those serving in the Persian Gulf Squadron.
The Government of Bombay consults with the Commander-in-Chief to ascertain what the responsibilities of the Senior Naval Officer are in the above cases.
The item contains a table of contents (ff 1147-1148), and the title page (f 1146) contains the following references: Draft Number ‘1230-/58’, ‘Collection No. 1 of No. 10 of 1858. Vol: 8’, and ‘Examiner’s Office’. The collection number was originally given as ‘8’ but this has been crossed out and replaced with ‘1’.
