This item contains two documents:
1. A prospectus for a French commercial enterprise trading in Turkey [Ottoman Empire], Persia [Iran], and India, found in the papers of the French Consul in Baghdad Jean-François Rousseau after his arrest in October 1798 and copied by Harford Jones.
This document was enclosed in Jones’s letter to Henry Dundas, Secretary of State for War, dated 31 October 1798 (IOR/L/PS/9/76/43 and 44).
2. A copy of a letter from Peter Tooke, Agent of the East India Company in Constantinople [Istanbul], to Harford Jones, sent from Constantinople and dated 15 November 1798.
The letter forwards information regarding the French Revolutionary Wars in the Eastern Mediterranean, including events in Corfu and Albania and a planned Turkish [Ottoman] and Russian expedition against French-occupied Alexandria.
Attached is a letter from Francis Werry, British Consul in Smyrna [Izmir], to Tooke, forwarding information from Alexandria concerning the condition and activities of the French occupation forces.
