Extracts of two letters addressed to John Barker, Proconsul in Aleppo.
The first letter (author unknown) was sent from Constantinople [Istanbul] and dated 13 October 1799. It reports developments in the French Revolutionary Wars in Europe, including civil unrest in France, a British expedition to Holland, and the assembly of a large Russian force thought to be headed for Malta or Alexandria.
The second letter, from Peter Tooke, East India Company Agent in Constantinople, was sent from Constantinople and dated 13 October 1799. It commends Barker for his report on Syria (catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/92) and reports the surrender of the Dutch fleet.
