This item contains two letters with enclosures:
1. A copy of a letter from Sir William Sidney Smith, Commander of the British naval squadron in the Levant, to John Barker, Proconsul in Aleppo, sent from HMS Tigre off Limasol [Limassol] and dated 12 October 1799. The letter concerns difficulties in communication, the state of the French occupation forces in Egypt, and the movements of an Ottoman fleet under Seid Ali [Sayyid ‘Alī] Bey towards Egypt.
Attached is a letter in French from Antonio Vondiziano, Vice-Consul in Larnaca, describing the death of the Ottoman Patrona [Vice-Admiral] Fettah [Fatḥ] Bey in a mutiny.
2. A copy of a letter from Jonathan Duncan, Governor of Bombay, to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], sent from Bombay [Mumbai] and dated 16 October 1799. Following the interception of dispatches from Bussora [Basra], the letter asks for Jones’s opinion on secure routes of communication from Bussora to Constantinople [Istanbul].
Attached is a letter from Duncan to Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], sent from Bombay and dated 16 October 1799. The letter expresses concerns about the transit of overland mail from Europe to India via Bussora.
