Letters between Harford Jones, Lord Elgin, the Earl of Mornington and John Malcolm

This item contains copies of three letters:
1. A letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, sent from Bagdad and dated 17 January 1800. In response to Elgin’s letter of 21 December 1799 (found in IOR/L/PS/9/76/104 and 106), Jones acknowledges the receipt of Elgin’s letter of 21 December and pledges not to open or read letters addressed to Elgin from India as instructed. A duplicate of this letter can be found in IOR/L/PS/9/76/106.
2. A letter from the Earl of Mornington (Richard Wellesley), Governor-General of Bengal, to Harford Jones, sent from Fort William, [Kolkata], and dated 29 November 1799. The letter concerns policy towards Persia [Iran], asking Jones not to interfere in relations with the Courts of Baba Khan Khan [Fatḥ-‘Alī Shāh Qājār, Shāh of Persia] or Zeman Shah [Zamān Shāh Durrānī, Ruler of Afghanistan].
3. A letter from Captain John Malcolm, Envoy of the Governor-General of Bengal to Persia, to Harford Jones, sent from Bombay [Mumbai] and dated 14 December 1799. The letter outlines Malcolm’s travel plans and asks for information concerning Persia and news from Europe and Egypt. The letter also forwards an extract of Malcom's letter of instructions from the Governor-General of Bengal dated 10 October 1799, instructing Malcolm to establish contact with the Residents at Bussora [Basra] and Bagdad.
