Copies of three letters sent by Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad]:
1. A letter from Harford Jones to Peter Tooke, Agent of the East India Company in Constantinople [Istanbul], sent from Bagdad and dated 12 November 1800. The letter concerns ‘Tartars’ [couriers] employed by the East India Company to carry mail between Constantinople and Bagdad. Jones reports that Hassan Byrackdar [Bayrakdar], a Tartar employed by the Company, has been plundered en route to Bagdad, and instructs Tooke to prevent Company-employed Tartars from carrying correspondence or goods on behalf of third parties.
2. An extract of a letter from Harford Jones to Jonathan Duncan, Governor of Bombay, dated 18 November 1800. The letter reports the plunder of a Tartar employed by the East India Company between Constantinople and Bagdad, forwarding the above letter to Peter Tooke on the subject.
Attached is a list of letters recovered after the attack.
3. A letter from Harford Jones to Peter Tooke, sent from Bagdad and dated 10 December 1800. The letter concerns arrangements for the transit of mail between Constantinople and Bagdad.
