- Scope & Content:
-
This item contains copies of three letters:
1. An extract of a letter from John Barker, Proconsul in Aleppo, to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], dated 24 November 1800. The letter describes a rebellion in Tripoly [Tripoli, Lebanon] against the Ottoman governor Yousef Pashaw [Yūsuf Pāshā], during which the houses of the British Agent George Catziflis and other British-protected persons were damaged and the Pashaw forced to retreat.
2. A French translation of a letter from Soliman Pacha [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad] to Harford Jones. The letter states that the Pacha has received reports from the Mussaleem [Mutasallim, Governor] of Bassora [Basra] that a number of French ships have arrived in Muscat and are heading towards Bassora. The Pacha admonishes Jones and Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bassora, for not informing him of this earlier.
Attached is a translation of a note from the Mussaleem of Bassora, reporting news received by merchants in Bassora from merchants in Muscat that French ships have arrived there and are travelling towards Bassora.
3. A French translation of a letter from Harford Jones to Soliman Pacha, sent from Bagdad and dated 2 January 1801. Jones states that he would have informed the Pacha about the French ships if he had had official information on the subject, and affirms that he will always keep the Pacha informed of important news.
