This item contains copies of two letters:
1. A letter from Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, sent from Bagdad and dated 6 April 1801. Jones complains of the difficulties of hiring ‘Tartars’ [couriers] in Bagdad and again presses Elgin to intercede with the Porte [Government of the Ottoman Empire] on this issue. The letter also reports the arrival and departure of Captain John Malcolm in Bagdad and forwards various correspondence.
2. A letter from Lord Elgin to Harford Jones, sent from Constantinople [Istanbul] and dated 11 March 1801. Elgin describes the measures he has taken to address Jones’s complaints about Tartars in Bagdad. The letter also forwards correspondence and reports that Austria has made peace with France.
