Copies of three letters concerning a dispute between Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], and Soliman Pashaw [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad]:
- A letter from Harford Jones to Samuel Manesty, Resident in Bussora [Basra], sent from Bagdad and dated 21 July 1801. Jones reports that he has transmitted letters from Manesty to the Pashaw and other senior members of the Government of Bagdad
- A letter from Harford Jones to Jonathan Duncan, Governor of Bombay, sent from Bagdad and dated 21 July 1801. Jones forwards correspondence relating to his dispute with Pashaw, speculates that women in the Pashaw’s harem and French agents have provoked the dispute in order to have him removed from Bagdad, and defends his own conduct towards the Pashaw
- A letter from Harford Jones to Lord Elgin, HM Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, sent from Bagdad and dated 23 July 1801. Jones further complains of the Pashaw’s behaviour towards him, defends his own conduct, and speculates that there is a conspiracy to have him removed from Baghdad.
These letters were enclosed in Jones’s letter to Jonathan Duncan dated 4 August 1801 (catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/163).
