- Scope & Content:

This item contains translations of three Farsi documents:
1. A firmaun [firman, edict] issued by Fath Ally Shah, King of Persia [Fatḥ-‘Alī Shāh Qājār, Shāh of Iran] to all beglerbegs [high-ranking provincial governors] and other local governors and officials, issued in Tahran [Tehran] and dated Jemade al awal [Jumāda al-Āwwal] 1216 (September-October 1801).
The firman states that, following a treaty signed between representatives of Persia and Britain, merchants from each country are protected in the other’s territory. It also orders that any person employed in Persia in a political or commercial capacity by Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad [Baghdad], should be protected and assisted.
2. A firmaun issued by Fath Ally Shah to Hajee Khleel Khan Melik ul Tajar [Ḥājī Muḥammad Khalīl Khān Qazvīnī Mālik al-Tudjār], Persian Ambassador to the Governor-General of Bengal, issued in Tahran and dated Jemade al awal [Jumāda al-Āwwal] 1216 (September-October 1801).
The firman states that Hajee Khleel Khan’s representations to the Ministers of the Government of Persia have been received, and orders him to obey the instructions of the Ministers during his embassy in India and to make any further requests known.
3. A letter from Meerza Bozurg [Mīrzā ‘Īsá Khān Farāhānī, Vizier to the Crown Prince of Persia] to Harford Jones.
The letter forwards the above firmans and other correspondence, explaining that Hajee Khleel Khan requested the Persian Government to reissue official documents with new seals following the downfall of Hajee Ibrahim [Ḥāji Ibrāhīm Khān Zand Kalāntar Shīrāzī, Prime Minister of Persia], and asking Jones to inform Hajee Khleel Khan that this has been done. The letter also states that Mohammed Reza Khan [Muḥammad Rezā Khān], a Persian employee in Karbalai [Karbala] saved from execution by Jones’s intervention, is returning to his former post.
