This item contains copies of two letters:
1. A letter in French from Jean-François Rousseau, French Commissioner of Commercial Relations in Bagdad [Baghdad], to Harford Jones, Resident in Bagdad, dated 25 February 1802. Rousseau thanks Jones for facilitating a meeting with the Pacha [Büyük Sulaymān Pāshā, Governor of Baghdad], asks for Jones’s advice.
Another copy of the same letter is catalogued as IOR/L/PS/9/76/222.
2. An extract of a letter from Peter Tooke, Agent of the East India Company in Constantinople [Istanbul], to Harford Jones, sent from Constantinople and dated 26 December 1801. In response to Jones’s request for cowpox matter for purposes of inoculation (see IOR/L/PS/9/76/194), Tooke writes that he has requested a sample from Vienna, which he will reproduce with inoculations in Constantinople and then send to Bagdad.
